The Old Shepherds’ Trail to Velika planina is a scenic hike that takes you from the valley of Stahovica all the way to the high alpine pastures of Velika planina. Along the route, the landscape gradually changes from forest trails and quiet countryside paths to open mountain views and traditional shepherd settlements.

The hike begins in Stahovica and first climbs towards Sveti Primož, a small hilltop church known for its beautiful panoramic views over the Kamnik region. After a short break, the trail continues higher through the forest before opening into the wide alpine meadows of Velika planina.

As we reach the plateau, the scenery becomes more open and peaceful, with traditional wooden shepherd huts, grazing cattle and views across the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. We explore the famous shepherd village on Velika planina, one of the few preserved high mountain herdsmen settlements in Europe, where you can experience a more authentic side of Slovenian alpine culture and mountain life.

The trail then continues towards Zeleni rob, which is the highest point of the tour and one of the best viewpoints on Velika planina. The route is technically easy and follows mostly well-maintained trails, making it suitable for hikers with a basic fitness level. Throughout the hike, there is plenty of time for breaks, photos and enjoying the slower pace of the mountains.

After reaching Zeleni rob, we descend comfortably back into the valley by cable car, finishing the tour in Stahovica.
